mother daughter relationships & unconditional love.

when patty contacted me to take photos of her and her daughter, i was excited. excited because her neighbor who is a client of mine (that i love) referred her to me. excited because i always love taking photos. excited because it was a mother and her girl. but i didn't know what to expect and i didn't think much of it until i was driving there. wait, it's just a mom and her daughter. just the two of them. sweet. so we spent the whole time hanging out and laughing a LOT and i was snapping away. i was smiling big the whole time behind my camera and i'll admit, i was living vicariously through them for those minutes in time. i was transported back to when i was a teenager and my mom was my best friend. she still is, but it was different then. this session made me remember it so vividly. her daughter is a senior this year and is wrapping up this era of her life... i loved the way they leaned on each other (not just physically) in the awkward moments. i know it's weird to try to act natural when you are aware enough to know what a camera is doing in your face. i am the queen of awkward-in-front-of-a-camera, that's why i try to stay behind it. :) but sometimes that's what produces authenticity. sometimes when things get awkward, i laugh. and i let the people in front of my camera work it out amongst themselves. then they do what they'd really do, not what i'm telling them to do or not what is fake. what is real. what i saw was love. unconditional love. mothers and daughters are so special to me because i love my mom, and i love my daughter. i love my relationship with both of them individually more than anything. i want to do more sessions like this.
